So what is a network camera?  A short introduction...

Traditional security cameras have been around for a long time, but over the last few years, advances in internet technology have given rise to a totally new breed of camera - the network camera. Also known as an IP camera, or an internet camera, this sophisticated device is actually far more than just a camera. Oh, and it's nothing like a webcam either. Webcams are generally designed for trivial home use. The big disadvantage of the webcam is that it needs to be attached to a running computer to operate. It is therefore not well-suited to being installed for security purposes.

"operates with no PC attached"

The network camera, on the other hand, actually comes with its own built-in computer, capable of carrying out many advanced functions - so it operates with no PC attached. The most important function, and the one that makes the network camera so different from the old analogue video cameras, is its ability to send moving images over a standard computer network, such as a company's Ethernet network, or the internet.  The camera really does do all this without being attached to a PC - all of its processing power is built-in. It simply needs to be linked to an ADSL phone line or a computer network.

"records incidents triggered by movement"

Apart from transmitting images over the net, another very important feature is a memory or "buffer" built into the camera, which temporarily stores images of incidents triggered by movement in the camera's field of vision. An almost unbelievable aspect of this feature is the camera's ability to "travel back in time" and store a certain amount of footage up to the point at which it is triggered. Well, the camera doesn't really have a time travel facility - what it really does is to keep a small store of the most recent footage in its memory "just in case"! When the device is triggered, these images are retrieved from memory and added to as the incident progresses. But it doesn't stop there. The camera sends the images via the internet to a safe place, and can also send an email or even a text message at the time of the trigger to alert the recipient to the incident.

"see live footage via the internet"

As well as the security features mentioned above, authorised users can log in to a web page at any time, on a home PC for example, using a password naturally, and see live footage via the internet, on demand, from the camera. This can be recorded if required using additional software. Recordings can also be scheduled for particular times, when a house or business is unoccupied, for example.
