Our
"Gold Standard" for network cameras
There are already a good number of network cameras on the market. As the technology has become established and reliable, cheaper cameras have started appearing, aimed at the home user. These cameras are good value in terms of the technology
that can be obtained for your money, but they are simply not good enough for professional use, usually having poor image quality, reliability, processing power or memory. In general, it's a market in which you get pretty much what you pay for. Here is our "gold standard" - the minimum standard that we accept when choosing a camera to install:
-
Image quality - the camera must be able to produce high-quality images, even in poor light
-
Motion detection - the camera must be able to record before as well as after it is triggered by some movement, and it must be able to send the images immediately to a remote site
-
The camera must be capable of recording at a minimum of 15 frames per second - this is the threshold at which humans stop seeing a series of still images and start seeing one flowing image
-
Streaming video - the camera must be able to encode and send a continuous stream of images to enable remote live viewing
Reliability - the camera must be designed for continuous unattended operation and built to "industrial" standards - even if
it is installed in a domestic setting
Not part of the "gold standard", but an nice-to-have if rather costly feature:
-
Pan/tilt/zoom or
"PTZ". This gives the viewer the ability to actually move the camera around and zoom in and out - even from the other side of the world! We
can supply two or even three "fixed" cameras for the price of one with this feature, but if you just want one discreet camera, the extra flexibility might be for you.
